Biochar “The Black Gold”

In Pasuruan Regency, East Java, Ibu Kursiyah, a rice farmer, shares her success story after joining the biochar mentoring program by the Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS). This program introduced biochar as an innovative soil amendment capable of increasing crop yields while supporting environmental sustainability.

“I was initially hesitant to try biochar because it was something new for us,” said Ibu Kursiyah. However, after participating in training and receiving direct guidance from the YBTS team, she decided to apply biochar to her rice fields.

The results were remarkable. Her rice production increased by 36 percent compared to fields that did not use biochar. Not only that, but she also managed to reduce fertilizer usage by 20 percent. “I never expected the results to be like this. My fields look more fertile, and I can save on fertilizer costs,” she expressed with a joyful smile.

The support from YBTS not only provided technical training but also ensured that farmers like Ibu Kursiyah received maximum benefits from biochar. “We were not only given materials but also received direct assistance in the field. This way, we could learn the proper way to use biochar,” she added.

Ibu Kursiyah’s success story is a testament to the positive impact that innovations like biochar can have on farmers. With more abundant harvests and more efficient costs, she is now more confident in continuing to develop her farming.

“Biochar has truly helped us small farmers to progress. I hope more farmers will try it and experience the benefits just like I have,” she concluded with enthusiasm.

Through this biochar program, YBTS continues to support local farmers in improving their welfare while preserving soil sustainability for the future.
