Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS) recently held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in Waibron Village, West Sentani District, Jayapura, as a platform for open dialogue between local farmers and the Jayapura Regency Government. The event was attended by the Regent of Jayapura, Dr. Yunus Wonda, S.H., M.H., along with Member of the Regional House of Representatives (DPRK), Bob Yath Seen Banundi, and the Head of the Agriculture Office of Jayapura Regency.
This FGD provided a critical opportunity for farmers to directly express their key concerns on the field, including limited market access, fertilizer availability, maintenance of agricultural machinery, and pest and disease management. The local government expressed strong support and committed to developing policies that are responsive to the farmers’ needs.
As part of the promotion of sustainable agriculture practices, participants also engaged in a demonstration of Eco-Enzyme production—a simple, environmentally friendly solution that can be made at the household level. A symbolic planting of Servo tomato seeds from Cap Panah Merah was also carried out at the YBTS demonstration plot, showcasing support for productive and adaptive horticultural innovation.
This event marked a significant step in strengthening collaboration between farmers and policymakers. Closing the session, the Regent of Jayapura expressed appreciation for YBTS’s dedication to farmer empowerment and announced a plan to send five selected farmers, recommended by YBTS, to Japan for advanced agricultural training. In addition, local agricultural products will be integrated into the regional food program in Jayapura Regency.
Through this collaboration, it is hoped that a stronger, more innovative, and sustainable agricultural ecosystem will emerge, addressing local food security challenges while creating greater economic opportunities for farmers in Jayapura.
