Let’s Grow Youth Farmers Strengthen Their Skills Through Bokashi Fertilizer Training

Building a new generation of independent young farmers begins not only with cultivating crops but also with understanding sustainable land management and making the best use of locally available resources. Through the Second Planting Season Refreshment program, Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS) organized a bokashi fertilizer training for participants of the Let’s Grow Program in Masebewa Village, Paga District.

The training was designed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in producing bokashi fertilizer using organic materials readily available in their surroundings. In addition to learning the production process, participants gained a better understanding of how organic fertilizers improve soil fertility and support healthy crop growth.

The session emphasized hands-on learning, allowing participants to take part in every stage of the process—from selecting raw materials and mixing the ingredients to applying proper fermentation techniques. This practical approach helps build both technical skills and confidence, enabling participants to apply what they have learned on their own farms.

Through this refreshment session, YBTS encourages young farmers to continuously improve their skills, adopt Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and make effective use of local resources. Their willingness to learn and embrace new knowledge is an important foundation for developing productive and sustainable farming enterprises.

Through the Let’s Grow Program, YBTS remains committed to empowering young farmers with the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence they need to become future leaders in agriculture and contribute to the development of more resilient and sustainable farming communities.

Growing Hope Through Youth Farmer Regeneration

Through initiatives like the "Let’s Grow!" program, YBTS is committed to addressing the challenge of farmer regeneration by equipping the younger generation with technical knowledge, life skills, and market access. Throughout 2025, these programs reached 25,068 youth, accounting for 41% of total beneficiaries. Notably, approximately 80% of these participants were first-time vegetable farmers. The results were significant: 34% of participants successfully moved out of poverty, with average daily incomes rising from Rp 59,584 in the first season to Rp 79,484 by the third. By combining a curriculum of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) with business management and market connectivity, YBTS proves that the agricultural sector can serve as a productive and profitable livelihood for the youth.

Muhammad, a 25-year-old from Tekasire Village, NTB, successfully transformed his life from an uncertain casual laborer to an independent farm owner through the Let’s Grow Project assisted by Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS) and the Ganesha Foundation. By applying Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) on his 1,000 m² plot—such as constructing high raised beds to prevent root rot in a water runoff path—he moved from guesswork to professional, data-driven management. His diligence in monitoring and strategically pruning his Batara F1 cucumbers resulted in 15 harvests and a gross income of IDR 21,710,000, far exceeding his previous wages. Now a "Future Farmer," Muhammad has secured his family's financial future and capital for the next season, proving that modern horticulture is a profitable career path for the younger generation.

From Fisherman to Farmer, The Story of Youth Farmer

Ordianus Kolo, a young man from Weihura Village in West Sumba, once worked as a fisherman with an uncertain income. His life changed when he joined YBTS training and began cultivating tomatoes. Despite losing most of his 1,800 plants to drought, Ordi persevered, harvesting over 1 ton of tomatoes and later expanding into pak choi, cucumber, shallots, and watermelon—earning a total profit of Rp52 million.
