The future of Indonesia’s food security lies in the hands of the younger generation. Through various initiatives such as the “Let’s Grow!” program, Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS) is committed to addressing the challenges of farmer regeneration by equipping youth with technical knowledge, life skills, and market access. The following are the key highlights of the YBTS youth farmers’ journey throughout 2025.
Strategic Achievements
YBTS has prioritized youth empowerment as a top priority, with results that have exceeded expectations:
- Broad Reach: YBTS reached 25,068 youth, representing 41% of the foundation’s total beneficiaries.
- Novice Farmers: Approximately 80% (6,266 individuals) of the youth supported are first-time vegetable farmers.
- Economic Improvement: Out of 2,448 youth demonstration plots implemented, 34% of participants have successfully moved out of poverty by achieving an income of more than USD 4 per day.
Impact
Data indicates that consistent, multi-season mentoring provides a steady positive impact:
- Income Growth: The average daily income for youth farmers increased significantly from Rp 59,584 in the first season to Rp 79,484 by the third season.
- Yield Optimization: Harvest performance relative to genetic potential standards also rose gradually from 59% to 73%.
- Productive Age: The highest concentration of active young farmers is within the 25–34 age group, a demographic that demonstrates higher commitment to land management.
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Life Skills
Through empowerment projects, youth are taught not only how to plant but also managerial aspects:
- Intensive Training: Participants undergo an onboarding phase that combines interactive classroom sessions with hands-on practice at learning farms.
- Comprehensive Skills: Beyond GAP, they are equipped with life skills such as decision-making, farm business planning, and agricultural accounting.
- Market Connectivity: Market Access & Connectivity (MAC) officers help young farmers ensure their harvests are linked to the right market channels to secure fair prices.
YBTS proves that with the right mentoring, vegetable farming can become a productive and profitable livelihood for the younger generation.
