SIPINDO, The Super Apps Behind The Harvest Increase in Lampung

In September 2022, SIPINDO visited their trained farmers in Lampung. SIPINDO provided an application that was made to guide farmers in Indonesia, including Lampung, in cultivating their crops. PT East West Seed Indonesia (EWINDO) and Netherlands Space Office (NSO) also joined in for this visit. The two organizations had a huge role in developing SIPINDO, especially in satellite projection.

Wahyudi, a assistedfarmer, has been using SIPINDO since 2018. The application helped him by giving accurate information about various stages of cultivation, such as pest identifications, weather prediction, and recommendations for suitable fertilizers. The information obtained became an important guide for Wahyudi in farming. For example, the fertilizer recommendations given by SIPINDO assisted Wahyudi create a more efficient fertilizing strategy for his crops. With the help of SIPINDO and the implementation of good agricultural practices, he successfully obtained a good harvest. Wahyudi explained that he had seen a 22% increase in his harvest.

The increase in farmers’ productivity highlighted the role of technology in the farming process. Ruud Grim, the project manager for sustainable development in NSO, explained that using the right technology could help achieve food security. NSO is currently focused on improving the farming industries in several African and Asian countries, including Indonesia. “Through satellite projection developed by NSO, we helped the farmers by providing various information, such as weather prediction. The information could guide farmers in the decision-making process regarding their crops.”

SIPINDO will continue to provide services to more farmers in Indonesia. One of their short-term plans is to widen their coverage to several areas in Indonesia, such as West Sumatera, North Sumatera, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara. Hopefully, the existence of SIPINDO will help increase the farmers’ productivity and quality of life.
