YBTS Encourages Farmers to Understand Market Access Strategies

Enhancing Smallholder Farmers’ Income and Livelihoods with Profitable Vegetable Production Practices

A good harvest becomes even more meaningful when farmers also understand where their produce will be marketed. Recognizing the importance of this, Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS), through its Training of Farmers (ToF) program together with the YBTS Market Access & Linkage Officer (MALO) Team in Sorong, created a learning space for farmers to better understand horticultural market access.

During the activity, farmers learned about vegetable supply chains, price developments at both farmer and local market levels, and the importance of marketing strategies in supporting sustainable farming businesses. These discussions are important to ensure farmers not only focus on cultivation practices, but also understand market conditions that influence the value of their harvests.

Farmers showed great enthusiasm throughout the session. Many participants actively asked questions, not only about the selling prices of curly chili and other vegetables, but also about planting schedules to maintain stable production and avoid drastic price drops during peak harvest periods.

“So far, we have mostly focused on how to achieve a good harvest. Through this activity, we learned that market strategies are also important so that our harvests can have better selling value,” said one of the ToF participants.

Through this market access-themed ToF, YBTS hopes farmers will better understand that optimal harvest results need to be supported by the right market strategies. Small steps through discussions and collaborative learning are expected to become valuable provisions for farmers to build more empowered, independent, and sustainable farming practices.
