Agustinus’s Success in Farming in Papua

For those who grew up in an agricultural environment, it may not be new when they eventually become farmers. Like a young man from Kajasbo Village, East Biak District, Biak Numfor Regency, Papua, namely Agustinus Faidiban, who is also known as Agus. Agus is one of the young farmers who is part of the Romuni farmer group and has been actively involved in agriculture from a young age. Even though at that time he was still just helping his parents, now he is active as a farmer and inspires those around him.

Initially, Agus worked as a health worker at his village health center. However, with assistance from the Bina Tani Sejahtera Foundation in 2018 which started its assistance with the Romuni farmer group, Agus finally joined. Together with this group, Agus started planting the Rawita F1 variety of chili peppers, the Sehati variety of cabbage, and the Yuvita F1 variety of eggplant. Of course, this was not a difficult thing for him because he had seen and helped his parents farm, even though at that time the application of farming practices was still limited. From this support, he began implementing good agricultural practices (GAP). His efforts were not in vain, as his crops grew optimally. This was proven as he successfully harvested all his crops, earning a profit of up to IDR 21,000,000 in a 3-month planting period.

“I realize that being a farmer is not just about planting. In fact, I had to learn everything from scratch, from seed selection to plant care. I learned a lot of new things from the YBTS staff. As a Biak native, I am proud to achieve a successful and satisfying harvest from my own land. There is no such thing as failure as long as we are willing to try,” said Agus.
