Context and Project Objective

The Biochar Program is a collaborative initiative between WasteX, YBTS, and Agathis Dammara Carbon under the WasteX-Bina Tani partnership, supported by WRI-P4G. The program aims to introduce biochar, known as “Black Gold,” as an innovative solution for soil improvement. It is designed to enhance soil fertility, reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, lower carbon emissions, and boost crop yields and farmer incomes, particularly in the Java Island region.

  • Improved soil quality through the application of biochar.
  • Reduced use of chemical fertilizers and carbon emissions.
  • Increased crop yields by up to 35% based on demonstration practices.
  • Average farmer income increased by up to 50%.
  • Dissemination of biochar technology to local farming communities through education and field practice programs.

Achievement

In 2024, this program successfully engaged 14 farmers who demonstrated the effectiveness of biochar. They recorded an increase in crop yields of nearly 35% and an average income increase of up to 50%. This initiative highlights the potential of biochar as an innovative solution for enhancing agricultural productivity while supporting environmental sustainability.
