Mace Papua Suffices Household Needs from Vegetable Farming

Orpa Simopraf, or known as mace Orpa, is one of the housewives that lives in the village of Air Mandidi, Teluk Kimi district, Nabire. One of the problems for the moms in the village is the price of vegetables that were pricey, stale, and a few choices to pick from vegetable cart sellers. Noticing those problems, mace Orpa made a farming group named Barisen, which means waves in Bahasa Indonesia.

At first, the moms in the village started to plant kangkong and tomatoes on their collective land. With the help of YTBS officers, they started to prepare their land while learning about seeding and fertilizer application, and safe use of pesticides in March 2020. In April 2020, as many as four hundred tomato crops were also planted in 250 m² in the field, applying the knowledge that they had already learned.

Mace Orpa and women farmers that participated in the farming group could make as much as Rp. 3,920,000 (around 280 USD). Not only plant tomato crops as a group, but also they plant vegetables such as kangkong, choisum, and spinach in home gardens to fulfill their household daily needs. Now, they even got additional money from selling their harvest to the local market.
