Mama Solvince and Pace Moses, a pair of farmers in Kwau Village, Warmare District, Manokwari Regency, Papua, are nearly 60 years old. Initially, they practiced farming as nomads by moving from place to place on the mountains. They never considered cultivating their backyard, even though it was spacious and had fertile soil.
Inspiration struck when they observed successful farming practices from their neighbors, assisted by Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS). Witnessing their neighbors successfully cultivating a permanent garden, Mama Solviance and Pace Moses began implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in their backyard. As a result, they successfully harvested crops such as kale, chilies, onions, mustard greens, and beans. The harvest of leafy vegetables from a single plant yielded a profit of around IDR 1,000,000 per month, significantly surpassing the previous income of only IDR 350,000 per month.
Mama Solvince and Pace Moses are delighted with the positive changes they have made. “We are grateful to have improved our harvest and quality of life by implementing good agricultural practices (GAP) and planting vegetables in our yard. Now, we no longer move around in our farming,” joyfully exclaimed Mama Solvince.
