Learning from the Field Through a Cauliflower Farmers Field Day

Learning does not always have to take place in a training room. For farmers, the field itself often serves as the best classroom, providing an opportunity to see firsthand how a commodity is cultivated and how its business potential can be developed.

Through a Farmers Field Day (FFD) organized under the De Eik Project Sorong, farmers gathered at Pak Ngadikan’s demonstration plot to learn more about cauliflower cultivation. The activity provided a platform for farmers to observe cultivation practices directly while discussing the potential of cauliflower as an agricultural commodity.

The choice of cauliflower as the focus of the learning session was not without reason. Since 2025, cauliflower prices in the Sorong area have remained relatively stable, ranging from Rp 30,000 to Rp 35,000 per kilogram. This stability indicates promising market opportunities and highlights cauliflower as a commodity with strong economic potential for farmers.

During the event, participants not only received information about cultivation techniques but were also encouraged to view farming from a business perspective. Through field discussions, farmers shared experiences, observed crop conditions, and explored various factors that influence both cultivation success and farm profitability.

In addition, farmers were introduced to the importance of farm business planning through the development of a Farm Business Plan (Rencana Usaha Tani/RUT). Planning is a key aspect of successful farming, as it helps farmers determine which crops to grow, schedule planting periods, and estimate harvest times in alignment with market demand.

According to Rahayu, MALO of the De Eik Project Sorong, effective planning can help farmers improve their chances of achieving more favorable selling prices.

“Farming is not only about planting and harvesting. Farmers also need to plan their farming activities carefully. Through a Farm Business Plan, farmers can identify market opportunities and schedule planting times more strategically so that their harvests can achieve better market value,” she explained.

By learning directly in the field, farmers were able to see the connection between cultivation practices and farm business management more clearly. This approach helps them understand that success is determined not only by production results but also by their ability to plan and manage their farming enterprises effectively.

The Farmers Field Day serves as an important knowledge-sharing platform that allows farmers to learn through hands-on experience. Through this activity, participants not only gained new insights into cauliflower cultivation but also strengthened their understanding that proper planning is an essential component of building productive and profitable farming businesses.
