Youth Planting Hope in the Arfak Mountains

Venus Dowansiba, a native youth from the Arfak Mountains in Manokwari, Papua, has a career as a civil servant. Nevertheless, his strong determination drives him to actively involve the youth in the field of agriculture. Venus strives to inspire the youth around him to be more enthusiastic about farming, with the hope of bringing positive change to their lives.

Through training and discussions with Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS), he was able to learn and apply the knowledge gained in his garden. His success in profiting from farming is tangible proof. Although Venus acknowledges that working in the garden has made his hands rough and swollen, his enthusiasm to continue planting vegetables and help other farmers sell their harvests never wavers.

Venus’s steps in using 200 m2 of land in her yard to plant pak choi by implementing good agricultural practices (GAP) show that farming can be done in various places and does not always have to be on large areas of land. For him, trying to farm on a smaller area first can motivate him to dare to farm on a larger area of land. His success serves as an inspiration for other farmers to grow vegetables, increase income, and improve their welfare.

“I hope that what I do can inspire more people to get involved in agriculture, especially the younger generation, to create a better future for the people of Papua and Indonesia,” said Venus.
