Sesibu, A Farming Group of Seminary Students Who Supported Tambolaka Farming Industries

Sesibu (Seminari Sinar Buana) farming group is a part of Sekolah Seminari Sinar Buana. The school, which was located in Wee Londa Village, Tambolaka City, was known to be well-off in terms of materials. Despite being economically sufficient, Peter Fernan, the coordinator of Sesibu, expressed that the initiation of this farming group was done to inspire the seminary students. He stated that it was essential for the young generation to see the potential around them, including in farming industries.

The farming group focused on cultivating horticulture. The seminary students were involved in every stage of cultivation through guidance provided by Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera through the Agricultural Livelihood Project through Integrated Approach (PERMATA) supported by William & Lily Foundation (WLF). This guidance encompasses land preparation, plant maintenance, and marketing of the harvest. The farming process taught the seminary students the importance of supporting economic activities and serving the public. The students and the school also encouraged the employees to start growing vegetables in their own gardens.

The existence of Sesibu’s farmlands, also known as Rainbow Garden (Kebun Pelangi), received a good response from local citizens. The outstanding quality of the goods gave them a more accessible place to purchase horticulture products. Their success in farming also inspired the citizens to improve their gardens by growing their vegetables. Not only that, but the beauty of Kebun Pelangi also became a recreational spot for the local citizens to take pictures and spend time with their loved ones.

The activities of the Sesibu farming group were much more than farming or supporting the economic development in Wee Londa village. They became the icon of hope and inspiration for the local citizens to continue improving their financial condition. As a seminary school, Sesibu proved that they would always be available to serve the people around them.
