Building Self-Reliance Through Agricultural at Namlea Correctional Facility

As part of efforts to support the rehabilitation and self-reliance of inmates, the Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS) in collaboration with the Buru District Agricultural Office held a Farmers Field Day (FFD) at the Class III Namlea Correctional Facility in Buru, Maluku. This activity served as a learning space as well as motivation for inmates to develop skills in agriculture, both for use during their time in the facility and as preparation for reintegration into society.

During the event, participants took part in dialogue sessions and hands-on practices on various agricultural technologies. The YBTS team and the Agriculture Office introduced the use of quality seeds, pest and disease management, and proper crop care techniques. This practical, field-based approach made it easier for inmates to understand each stage of cultivation and apply it directly.

The Head of Class III Namlea Correctional Facility, Muhammad M. Marasabessy, expressed his appreciation for this collaboration. He noted that agricultural activities like the FFD can inspire interest and independence among inmates in farming while supporting productive rehabilitation programs that benefit the wider community. “This activity fosters interest and self-reliance in farming among inmates while contributing to national food security,” he said.

YBTS believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn and grow into a better version of themselves, including inmates. Through programs like this, YBTS aims to equip them with practical agricultural skills that can serve as a foundation for building a more independent life after completing their rehabilitation period.

As an added form of support, YBTS also provided agricultural tools and supplies, which were enthusiastically received by all participants. This assistance is expected to strengthen ongoing agricultural activities within the correctional facility and support the continuity of self-reliance programs for the inmates.
