Better Practices Bringing Better Harvests for Farmers in Papua

Mama Elisabet Fakdewer from Kampung Yongnam, North Manokwari District, West Papua, is one of the farmers participating in the Agricultural Livelihood Improvement Program through Profitable Vegetable Cultivation, supported by Stichting De Eik and East West Seed Knowledge Transfer.

Before joining the program, Mama Elisabet relied on traditional farming methods that often-produced inconsistent results. Challenges such as pest attacks, suboptimal soil conditions, and irregular crop management made her harvests unpredictable.

Through YBTS monitoring, she began practicing more efficient cultivation techniques, including proper land preparation, appropriate fertilizer applications, and regular pest control. These simple adjustments have brought significant improvements to her farm.

Mama Elisabet with her harvest

Today, the yard-long beans of the Guarda variety that she cultivates have produced 15 rounds of harvesting. She has successfully sold 411 bundles at Rp5,000 per bundle, earning approximately Rp2,055,000. With her plants still productive, the upcoming harvests are expected to further increase her household income.

Seeing these promising results, Mama Elisabet now plans to expand her cultivation area and add new commodities to boost productivity in the coming seasons.
